I did it, people. The first words I uttered on the first day of the month (at around 1am last night) were "Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit". Does anybody else do that? It's something I learned in high school: if the first thing you say is "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" on the first day of the month, then you're supposed to have good luck all month long. I haven't managed to do that in years. Hmmmpf. We'll see if June turns out to be a good month or not. Lord knows I have plenty on my plate and I could certainly use some good luck in the next three to four weeks!

I can use the luck - so here I go!
I have never heard of that. Is it some sort of voodoo mystic somethingorother?
I swear my very good friend in high school told me that. I just called her to ask her if I'm misremembering this, because outside of that (possibly fabricated from nothingness) memory, I have never heard of it, either. Waiting to hear back from her. Don't hold your breath. I'm not.
Damn it. I totally lost my good luck window. Black-eyed peas and banging pans on New Years, I know about. Rabbit, rabbit in June? Umm, no.
Boy does that ever bring back memories!
A-ha! Bloggus Nuttus knows of this particular childhood ritual?
And let's be precise about this:
You have to say "rabbit" THREE TIMES. Not once, not twice, not four times. Three times exactly, like so: "Rabbit. Rabbit. Rabbit."
A N D : you must not have uttered anything else prior to this..."rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" must be the first words to pass your lips on this day (I assume starting at midnight...although sometimes I use dawn as the day's beginning...not sure if that's cheating, though)
A N D: it has to be on the first day of the MONTH...any month...but it has to be the FIRST day of the month, or else it doesn't mean anything.
So, for anyone who mutters sotto voce "...eff you, alarm clock!" prior to rising, well, you've already blown it (lookin' at you, Blognut)
Take heart, though...there's always July! You now have an entire month to practice.
If only it was "dammit, dammit, dammit"... because then I'd SO TOTALLY be in!
LOL! Hyphen Mama, I owe an entire post to you, for this and several other comments. But seriously, you made me LOL in my kitchen when I read this. You are so right!
My husband always says "Rabbit" (or perhaps "Rabbit Rabbit," but never "Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit") on the first day of the month for as long as I've known him. Now he's got the kids doing it. I never do it because I am defiant that way. Sunday he woke up and said it, and then my daughter informed him that it was the 31st. Psyche on him!
I can't remember anything like that in high school but I'm game for anything new!
Never ever ever heard of it. But here's hoping you get som eluck.
"Rabbit, rabbit" had to be your orally stated first words on the first of the month. On January 1, the words had to be uttered while descending the staircase backwards.
I was told it fended off bad luck, as good luck was of your own making. Heard of it from my second wife, who had been saying it since childhood. She claimed it was a tradition handed down from her grandparents from PA.
